This poem was written sometime around the early 1980’s about the air war in Vietnam – but it now sounds strangely recent and familiar…

Heaven Sent (?)

Killing without kindness

The luck of the bombs

Dropped with pinpoint madness

Changing the earth

To suit some high-tech whims

And like whims

They burn quickly

In the night

So bright

Straw villages

Relentlessly bright

In the spontaneous hellfire of war

When our might seemed so right

When our strength turned to weakness

Liberty’s torch was extinguished

Add a little knowledge

A lot of greed

A pinch of my country ‘tis of thee

The lead of bullets and bombs

Turning the earth into a hellish hole

The nightmare results of madmen’s souls.
