Gun Violence and Hunting in America

Editorial by Patrick Sayavong

.

...............I disagree with Kaufman's assessment of civilization in America. He says little boys playing with toy guns wouldn't matter one way or another. I think it does matter because they will grow up playing with real guns and hurt innocent people. Little boys don't realize the consequences and effects of guns until they are older. Guns influence them to be a different sort of character. By confiscating these kinds of toys it will be helpful to the society. It will not stop the numbers of shootings and killings but it will make them think about the choices that they make.

...............I also disagree to Kaufman's saying about how he and his wife were agreeing to raise their children in an atmosphere of nonviolence. He lets his uncle from Israel take his son off to Macy's to buy the biggest, noisiest toy machine gun he could ever find. I think that is leading and influencing toward a violent mind-set. What would happen if his son had pointed the gun to a police officer and pressed the trigger? From what I have seen in our society, I think toy guns are one of the major influences on children today. Instead of buying the kid a toy gun he should buy something that is productive. Something that will benefit him throughout his life.

...............Kaufman agrees with Troake's opinion about hunting gray seals for skin. Killing gray seals for their skin is unnecessary. It is not like the mackerel and cod, which Troake hunts. Seals tend to have a problem of producing in the wild at a rate equal or greater than their losses to overhunting. Every year the population of gray seals is decreasing. One day the gray seal will be in the endangered species list with other species including the killer whale. Jack's great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were in the hunting business, but it doesn't mean that Jack had to do the same.
