U.S. Threatens United Nations

Welcome to the nightmare of the world! Reuters reported on 05/09/01 that the Congress of the United States might decide to withhold payment to the United Nations as a way of punishing that body for daring to democratically vote the United States off two committees. Now, let’s pause a moment.

First of all, the United States owes back payments of MORE THAN $1.9 BILLION!!!! What happens to the ordinary person who owes money, but doesn't pay? Try it with your credit card, or your mortgage, or you car payment. You'll find that justice is swift. You go to court, you lose your house, you lose your car.

Second of all, the process that got the U.S. kicked off the council was completely democratic. By issuing threats, the U.S. subverts the democratic process, once again demonstrating that money, not ethics, is our language. Democracy is good for us, but not really for anyone else, you see.

The most recent plan to come up with the missing funds was presented by Ted Turner, who offered to pay, out of the kindness of his heart, what the U.S. government owes the United Nations. Of course, he would not expect any kind of special treatment, tax breaks, blind eyes, and etc.

Is this how we want our politicians to conduct the business of our nation? On the other hand, can we reasonably expect them to act any differently? They are merely the product of a system that produces corruption and iniquity. The question i ask is one that has come down through history: WHAT IS TO BE DONE?
