What do you think?

I have a question that I would like anyone to answer.

The other day I was watching the tube when someone on one of the shows made a joke. After a few seconds, the person who had told the joke realized the joke wasn't funny to the other, and said "Just kidding," Here's what i don't understand: The person he had told the joke to responded with "You don't have to say that, it's either funny or it's not."

Now, in that phrase, I want to know that if it's not funny, is it taken as serious, or is it still a joke to them?

  • I think this is a matter of perspective. It's like, if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound? Is something a joke because the person is trying to be funny or because it makes other people laugh? My opinion is that if the speaker is intending something to be a joke, it is such. But on a deeper level, I can see why it would not be a joke if it isn't funny or if it is hurtful.
    Thanks for the question!

  • Sounds like this is an attempt at a joke and while it was a failed attempt, that does not mean that it is serious.
