Death of a Queen

I’ve never been much on an insect person. I step and crush them whenever I get a chance. I never cared much for them because I’m bigger than they are, so it must mean I’m more important. Yesterday I killed the biggest bee I’ve ever seen. It also looked different. I could have sworn it had purple wings as I was stepping on it, but when I lifted my feet all I saw was guts, guess I imagined it. What could it have done for me that I couldn’t have done for myself? Hmmm let me think… NOTHING! Oh so I thought.

The next day I was walking down the valley side looking for my favorite pretty yellow flowers to pick and could not find any. A field that was once covered with so many yellow flowers, that even the grass looked yellow, was bare. I could not figure out what happened.

Well, if my favorite flowers couldn’t make my day then I thought I would go and get some of my favorite snack, honey. Ummmm honey. My mouth just waters thinking about it, and how it makes me feel. I walk to the bee farm, which is farmer Beelies’ place, to see what she had for me, because she knows how much I love honey. I found her sitting on her porch with her head hanging low. I asked her what was wrong. She said “Timmy… I’m sorry, but I don’t have any honey for you today”. “My honey bees have all ran away.” “It seems the queen bee, “purple feathers”, is missing, so they all quit working and have gone in search for her.” “They refuse to pollinate any flowers or make any honey until she comes back.” “All I can do is wait here, and hope they find her, or we can forget about seeing anymore flowers and honey in this town” “They left since yesterday and haven’t been back since.” “I’m afraid she might have been killed” “Oh my!” “I hope she hasn’t been killed, because they will never come back if she has.”

All I could do was ask why she calls the queen bee “purple feathers”? She said with a smile, “because she is the most beautiful insect you’ll ever see.” “She is unusually big for a bee and she has purple wings.”

It was then that I realized that I had single handedly altered the future of my town, and destroyed, not only my happiness, but also everyone (including insect) that benefited from the “purple winged” queen bee.
